Masala and Meatballs – Indian Food with an American Twist

I would say I am a pretty adventurous eater.  I once ate a shrimp that was still alive and moving in Tokyo!

My love for trying new foods and flavors stems from my love of travel. You won’t find me eating at McDonald’s out of comfort in a foreign country. I am usually looking for the most authentic food experience I can find. And if you throw in a local cooking class, that’s a bonus! I love bringing new flavors home, and as my kids have gotten older, I love exposing them to a variety of foods. 

Do my kids eat hotdogs and Macaroni and Cheese? Of course they do.  But they also eat Chinese Kung Pao Chicken, Sushi, Indian Tikka Masala, Moroccan Chicken, and MORE.  Do they love everything they try? Of course not. But, I believe that if you expose kids to different cuisines, it sparks curiosity and appreciation for other cultures.  “Mommy, where is India?” My son asked this past weekend after my latest adventure dinner cooking with my new cookbook,  Masala and Meatballs by Asha Shivakumar.  

If you are looking for a fun way to introduce new flavors and spice to your kids, you need to check out this cookbook- traditional Indian dishes with an American twist. 

Chicken Curry Pot Pie, Chicken Naan Pizza, Coriander-Spiced Pulled Chicken Wraps, Curried Shrimp and Pineapple, and Fish Tacos sound less intimating for sure! And how about No-churn Coffee Ice Cream or Fruity Lassi Ice Pops for dessert…mmm!

I chose to make “Nut-Crusted Halibut with a Green Onion Sauce served over Coconut Rice and Peas!” My kids love fish, and I thought they would love the coconut rice. Wow! It was delicious.  My kids loved the rice, (ok- well my youngest picked out and threw the peas, but that’s standard). They both ate all of their fish and even tried the green onion sauce as “dip dip.”  My husband and I couldn’t get enough of the sauce on our fish. In fact, next time, I am making more of it!  The coconut rice had a little heat, not too much for the kids, but just enough to feel like you were getting a little spice! It was truly was a fantastic dinner. 

 

The recipes were super straightforward, and I was able to enjoy a glass of wine while managing it all! 

Don’t be afraid to think outside of the ordinary when making something for your family.  You might be surprised by what your kid will try and even enjoy! And if they throw peas, like my youngest, don’t get discouraged.  Keep exposing them and let them discover what they like!
